The Big Spider in School
3rd Place, 7th Grade
by Madelyn Owens, Terrell Academy
Zoey briskly walked through the dark hallways on the path out of school. Teachers and students have been mysteriously disappearing from school all day today, and Zoey decided she wanted nothing to do with it. There was almost no one left, and the people that were couldn’t do anything. The power was out and the school was miles out from any buildings or neighborhoods. It’s almost 30 minutes of nothing but trees and highways. Zoey was walking through the gym but was stopped by a silhouette of a person staring at her. She could see the sparkles of her uniform in the dark throughout the gym. Zoey immediately knew who it was and scowled. ” What do you want piper..” Zoey snapped. Piper tearfully said, “M-my friend, I-I c-can’t find her.” She stuttered. She paused before she could continue.” I need h-help p-please..” Piper quietly sniffled in the dark as Zoey looked behind her. The door out of the school was right there. But she looked back at teary-eyed Piper and decided to help. “OK, where was the last time you were with your friend?” she asked. “Near the bathroom I think…” Piper said. The two girls then trekked to the bathroom to retrace their steps. Zoey got out her phone, turned on the built-in flashlight and began looking around. Piper accidentally stepped on a loose floorboard that erupted with a creek! She shrieked and jumped into Zoey’s arms, who immediately dropped Piper who went rolling across the floor. She landed in something sticky, and Zoey put her flashlight where Piper said she fell, and found excessive pieces of string leading out into the hallway. “Wait eww! Why was it sticky ….” Piper whined. Zoey ignored her and noticed that the string was also in the hallway, leading into the library. “Quick, to the library!” Zoey whispered.
The girls slowly turned the corner into the library and what they saw shocked them. It was a giant spider! It held all the missing students and teachers captive too! It looked like it was sleeping for now, but they had to be very careful not to wake it up. Zoey and Piper tip-toed through the library. But by accident, Zoey pushed a book off a shelf too far, and it fell to the floor. The spider woke up and it grabbed Zoey! “ Piper help!” she shouted. But Piper’s legs refused to move. She was frozen in horror. “Piper please…” Zoey pleaded. The spider’s grip around her began getting tighter now, it was only a matter of time before she’d be smushed. Piper finally faced her fear and found an encyclopedia and hit the spider on the head. It immediately passed out and let Zoey free. The girls then escorted the captive students and teachers outside before the spider woke up again. Piper found her friend safe and sound and the school was safe!
