“Emory’s End”

October 29, 2025/in Spooky Story Contest Winners/by Emme Clause

by Lilly C. Parker, 7th Grade 2nd Place Winner

Prologue:

Emory Kate-Daniel was an exceptional 16 year old girl before it happened. She was top rider at her stable, one of the smartest in her grade, and very beautiful. You would think her life was perfect. Emory was very social, always lending a hand to others, but there was something off about her. In her wavy blonde hair, smile, and hazel eyes you could almost see something in her that wasn’t normal. The school showed us the video of her before Emory ran, she acted just like her parents before they died.

-Elizabeth and Richard Daniel

Beginning:

Emory walked into school on her presentation day with a smile on her face. As she sat down in class it hit her, she forgot her project! Emory started stressing out and her teacher pulled her out into the hallway with a furious look on his face. She started to faintly hear screams. She was yelled at for 20 minutes and sent to detention. Emory thought back to her teacher’s words how he mentioned something about telling her parents.

The screams gradually got louder. Emory started to freak out, her leg was twitching, her heart was racing, her mind spiraling in thousands of directions, but they all led to the same outcome, her greatest fear. She realized by being in detention that she wouldn’t have a perfect record, behavior, grades, or relationship with Mr. and Mrs. Daniel, her adopted parents. Mr. Daniel was never around always working with some lawsuit or another, Mrs. Daniel on the other hand was always there, always expecting perfection, and always expecting obedience.

Emory was getting so anxious she asked the detention teacher if she could go to the bathroom her request was granted. Instead of going to the bathroom she went out the front door and ran to the stables needing to calm down as the sound of the screams became horrifyingly familiar. She had to get on Solstice, her trusted horse, immediately.

She ran the mile like it was nothing and quickly got Solstice out the stall and jumped on her bareback. She cued her to gallop when they reached the field. The screams quieted for a moment. Solstice was her comforter, she never bucked, bolted, or resisted. Then all of a sudden her beloved friend bucked her off! The screams were at their loudest Emory curled up in a ball on the ground hoping for them to stop.

They stopped, she looked around and saw she wasn’t in the field anymore. It was dark, and there was no light. She felt around for a sign of anything but there was nothing. She saw a faint glow and looked closely at it. She crept closer and saw ghosts. Her heart skipped a beat. She then realized who they were. The screams came back even louder than before, the ghosts were her parents and they were repeating their death screams! Emory’s heart didn’t skip a beat this time…

     It stopped.
