Meet Ann
Ann Hite is the author of the award-winning Black Mountain series. Ghost On Black Mountain, her debut novel, was one of ten finalist for The Townsend Prize in 2012 and won Georgia Author of the Year in 2012. Lowcountry Spirit is a novella set in Georgia’s lowcountry. The Storycatcher is the second novel in the Black Mountain books.
Sleeping Above Chaos, the fourth book in the series, was a finalist for Georgia Author of the Year 2017 and also was a finalist in IndieFab in the Historical Fiction category.
Where The Souls Go, the third book in the series, was a finalist for IndieFab in the Historical Fiction category 2016.
Ann’s memoir about her grandmother and mother, whose stories heavily influenced the Black Mountain books, will be available soon. She has also stepped way out of her box and agreed to write a nonfiction narrative about Lucille Selig Frank, Leo Frank’s wife. Frank is known for his conviction in one of Atlanta’s famous murder trials and his lynching after the governor, who believed in Frank’s innocence, commuted his death sentence to life.
About the Book
I Am A Georgia Girl: The Life Of Lucille Selig Frank, 1888-1957 is a change of pace for Ann.
She was moved to write a work of nonfiction after talking with Steve Oney about his book about the Leo Frank case, titled “And The Dead Shall Rise.” When Lucille Frank, then 33-years-old, returned to Atlanta from Memphis six years following the lynching, she found her work at J.P. Allen, a women’s store. There, “she would regularly wait on the wives and children of the lynching brethren — she unaware of their connection to her husband’s death and they unaware, too,” Oney wrote.
That detail caught Ann’s attention. “The image that convinced me to write it as non-fiction, rather than as a historical fiction novel, was the image of her selling gloves at a kiosk to women whose husbands helped hang her husband,” she said. “Lucille was such a brave woman. Way before her time.”
