“A Good Life Gone Dead”

October 29, 2025/in Spooky Story Contest Winners/by Emme Clause

by Mary Marques, 4th Grade 3rd Place Winner

Once upon a time there was a girl named Misty.  Misty was in fourth grade and loved the nature.  She had blonde hair and red lips.  Misty’s teacher, Miss Rose, loved Misty.  She was probably her favorite student.  Misty loved Miss Rose as well.

“Miss Rose, can I go out to play?  I already finished my work,”  asked Misty.   “Sure Misty, go play with nature, it’s your favorite thing,” Miss Rose said.

“Thanks.”  As Misty walked outside she heard a whistle, “must just be the wind,” thought Misty.  She was walking home and she stopped by the pond.  Misty loved the pond, sometimes she would pack her bathing suit in her bag and stop for a swim while on the way home!  Misty changed into her bathing suit and then she dove in!  She heard that whistling sound again, but this time she got kind of scared.  “It’s just the wind,” she kept saying to herself.

But out of nowhere, a ginormous swampy creature covered in nasty gross stuff just started slinking out of the pond.  Misty screamed!  She could not believe her eyes!  She tried to run, but it had her legs.  She kicked and kicked and finally she broke free from the creature’s slimy hands and then she ran and ran as fast as she could.  Then it started chasing her!  She dropped her bag and just ran, leaving everything behind.  Nothing left.  Just Misty running.  She broke into a sprint.

Out of breath, she burst through the front door.  Still shaking with fear, she tried to tell her brother Evan, but of course he did not listen.  All he said was, “You’re joking.  That’s not even funny Misty!”  Misty thought in her head for a second, “of course, Evan wouldn’t listen , he never listens.  He’s 16.  He’s a teenager.”  “I think you should listen Evan because I’m not lying,”  Misty yelled.

Misty also tried to tell her mom, but she said, “How much candy did you eat today with your friends?”  “I didn’t go hang out with my friends, Mom!  I told you I went to the pond.  I didn’t have any candy.”  “Don’t lie,” her mother said.  “But I’m not,” Misty argued.  “Go to bed,” Mom barked.

That night, Misty thought and thought about the monster.  As Misty fell asleep, she saw some slimy green goo dripping from the ceiling.  It haunted her in her dreams.  The next morning, she didn’t wake up ever again.
