“Voices in the Dark”
by Audrey Miller
“Natalee!!! Natalee!!!” A shaky voice cried from the dark. “Come and play with me!!!” Natalee arose from her slumber. She didn’t know who was calling for her, but it was 3 AM in the morning–way too early to get out of bed. She nestled herself back under the covers. “Natalee!!!” The voice called yet again. “Natalee, why won’t you come play?” She had heard these voices last Halloween night, too.
Natalee was beginning to wonder to herself. Is someone after me? Are Mom and Dad pranking me again? Her mom and dad loved to play pranks on her. It made her laugh and always expect something fun, new, and exciting. But this was just creepy. Natalee got out of her bed and crept down the stairs. She was tired of this, and she really wanted to get some good sleep after a long night of trick or treating.
Natalee plopped down on the sofa. When Mom and Dad came out of their room to scare her she would tell them to quiet down. “Natalee…Natalee I see you…Come and play…” The voice was louder this time. It sounded like a little girl’s voice. Natalee tensed up. She was afraid. “Mom? Dad? Come out please and kiss me goodnight. I am way too tired for this.” But neither her mom or dad answered. Instead that spooky voice asked, “Natalee…I’ve been waiting so long… Come join me… We can play with dolls…Natalee?…” Natalee was practically frozen. “G-g-go away! I want to sleep!” Natalee whispered with fright. All of a sudden a girls’ pale face slammed against the window. “Natalee!” it said, “Why won’t you play?”
Natalee was horror struck as she stared straight into the seemingly dead girl’s frosted eyes. They were light gray, and her hair was dark and tangled. She wore a torn, bloody white dress with black rose-shaped ruffles along the sleeves and collar. “Natalee…” the girl whispered with a persuasive tone in her voice, almost as if she were trying to talk Natalee into something, “You’ve been such a bad girl to not come play with me when I asked…”
No… Natalee thought. She isn’t…Dead…Is she? Does she want me to die too so that I can play with her? “What are you waiting for, Natalee? Open the door and let me in…” The girl’s eyes moved to fixate on the door next to the window. Natalee was fascinated and disturbed at how much the girl could turn her eyes to look. “It will be a blast…” the girl continued. “Natalee spotted through the window many bright yellow eyes which she thought could be more undead things coming to get her. “I appreciate the offer, but I think I will pass.”
Natalee ran towards the stairwell and bolted up, but when she opened the door to her room the girl was standing there, hair over her face, looking right at her. Natalee screamed as a cold hand reached out and grasped her arm, and the world went blank.
